On a long, steep upgrade of an interstate, a loaded truck in your lane ahead of you turns on its hazard flashers. What should you understand, and what should you do?
Blue A follows a loaded tractor-trailer B in the right lane of an interstate roadway. White flash cues and the card identify B’s hazard flashers; a side-profile detail shows the long upgrade.
Correct answer: The truck is moving slowly up the grade; slow down early and keep a safe gap.
Why
Heavy trucks, farm equipment and horse-drawn vehicles take longer to gain speed and often cannot keep up with other traffic. When you come up behind slow traffic, slow down early and smoothly, so that the drivers behind you have time to react. Keep extra following distance behind a large vehicle that blocks your view, and pass only when you can do so safely and legally.
