At night, you drive on a dark, unlit road with a posted limit of 55 mph. Cars come toward you, so you use your low beams, which light about 250 feet ahead. What is the highest speed that the manual advises so that you can stop within the distance that you can see?
Blue A uses low beams on a dark, unlit two-way road as two silver cars approach in the other lane. The card gives the posted limit as 55 mph and the low-beam reach as about 250 feet.
Correct answer: 45 mph.
Why
Pennsylvania law forbids a speed at which you cannot stop within the assured clear distance ahead, and at night that distance is the part of the road that your headlights light. Pedestrians are the hardest to see at night, so a person can appear inside your stopping distance. Use high beams when no one is near, but switch to low beams within 500 feet of an oncoming vehicle or within 300 feet behind another vehicle.
