On a dry road, the car ahead of you passes a road sign, and you start to count. Your car passes the same sign after about 3 seconds. What should you do?
A follows B on a dry two-lane road. A’s front is level with a roadside sign, and the card says about three seconds have passed since B passed that same sign.
Correct answer: Drop back until the count is at least 4 seconds.
Why
Count from the moment the rear bumper of the car ahead passes a fixed point until your car reaches the same point. Four seconds lets you steer or brake around a hazard without a panic stop, which also protects the driver behind you. Add more time on wet or unpaved roads, downhill, behind large vehicles, and when a driver behind you wants to pass.
