Passing target: 83.3% (15/18)
You drive at 65 mph on a busy interstate inside a pack of vehicles. The car ahead is only about 2 seconds away, a car follows close behind you, and you ride in the blind spot of a car in the next lane. How can you best get back a safe following space?
A travels at 65 mph with B ahead, C close behind and D ahead in the next lane. A is beside D’s rear quarter, and the card states that the gap to B is about two seconds.
Correct answer: Ease off by 2 or 3 mph, so that the vehicles around you move ahead and open space.
Why
At 65 mph, a car travels almost 100 feet each second, so a 2-second gap leaves little time to react. A pack also often puts you in another driver's blind spot with no escape path. After the pack clears, keep at least a 4-second following distance on a dry road, and drive with the flow of traffic within the posted limit.
