You drive at night on a dark two-lane road with your high beams on. An oncoming car is about 700 feet away. You are also closing on a car ahead of you, which is now about 250 feet in front. What must you do?
At night, A uses high beams while closing on B in the same lane. C approaches in the opposite lane. The cards state that B is 250 feet ahead and C is 700 feet away. Both distances are marked not to scale.
Correct answer: Switch to low beams now, because you are within 300 feet of the car ahead.
Why
High beams glare in the mirrors of the car ahead and can blind an oncoming driver. Low beams light only about 250 feet ahead, so slow down when you dim them to avoid overdriving your headlights. On a dark road, the manual advises no more than 45 mph so that you can stop within the lighted distance.
