You want to go straight through the next intersection, but you notice too late that your lane has a right-turn arrow and the word ONLY on the sign above it and on the pavement. The lane beside you is full of traffic. What should you do?
A approaches an intersection in the right lane, with a right-turn arrow and ONLY on the pavement and on the overhead sign. B and C occupy the lane to A’s left; the card says A wants to go straight.
Correct answer: Make the right turn as the lane requires, then find another way back to your route.
Why
Lane-use signs and pavement arrows appear well before the intersection so that you can choose the correct lane early. Watch for them as you approach, and change lanes before the solid lines begin. A short detour after a forced turn is always safer than a last-second lane change.
