Your right wheels drop off the pavement onto a shoulder that is lower than the road. You eased off the gas, you hold the wheel firmly, and you straddle the edge. When should you steer back onto the pavement?
A straddles the pavement edge, with its right wheels on a lower gravel shoulder. A side-view detail shows the drop. The card states that the driver has eased off the gas and holds the wheel firmly.
Correct answer: After you slow to under 25 mph (10 mph is better) and check traffic behind.
Why
Drop-offs are common on rural roads and where roads are being resurfaced. The two most important points are: do not steer sharply, and do not brake suddenly. When the right wheels are back on the pavement, steer gently right to straighten the car. Then speed up to the flow of traffic when you have full control.
