You stop at a red light because you want to turn right. A sign beside the signal reads NO TURN ON RED and shows no times. The cross street is empty, and no one is walking. What should you do?
A waits behind the stop line at a red signal before a planned right turn. The signal detail has a NO TURN ON RED sign beside it with no time restrictions. The cross street and crosswalk are empty.
Correct answer: Stay stopped and wait for the green light, even though the cross street is empty.
Why
Without such a sign, Pennsylvania lets you turn right on a steady red light after a full stop, once you yield to pedestrians and cross traffic. The sign usually stands beside the road on the near side of the intersection or near the signal on the far side. A turn on red is always a choice: you may wait for the green even where the turn is allowed.
