You want to make a U-turn on a straight two-lane road where no sign forbids it. An oncoming car is about 300 feet away, and no other traffic is near. What should you do?
Enlarged details identify blue car A facing right and silver car B facing left. A straight two-way road overview places them in their own opposing lanes, with about 300 feet from A’s front to B’s front; the card states that A wants a U-turn and no sign prohibits it.
Correct answer: Wait until the car passes and no traffic is within about 500 feet.
Why
Pennsylvania law allows a U-turn only when you can make it safely and without interfering with other traffic. The law also forbids a U-turn on a curve or near the crest of a hill where the drivers of other vehicles cannot see your vehicle from 500 feet away in either direction. Do not make a U-turn where a NO U-TURN sign is posted.
