Freeways & High-Speed RoadsStandalone practice
A single-lane highway on-ramp has a signal at its end that changes between red and green. The light turns green, and the car ahead of you drives onto the highway. You are right behind it. What should you do?
A approaches the stop line on a single-lane entrance ramp. The ramp meter is green, and B has just entered the highway on that green; C is farther back in highway traffic.
Correct answer: Stop at the signal, wait for your own green, and then merge into a safe gap.
Why
Ramp meters spread out entering traffic during rush hour so that the highway keeps moving. On a ramp with more than one lane, each lane has its own meter. Use the rest of the ramp to build speed, and yield to traffic already on the highway.
