You drive under overhead lane-control signals. A steady yellow X appears above your lane, and a green downward arrow is lit above the lane to your right. What should you do?
A travels in the left of two lanes beneath a steady yellow X. A green downward arrow is displayed above the empty lane to A’s right.
Correct answer: Move safely into the lane under the green arrow, because your lane will soon change use.
Why
Lane-control signals are used at toll plazas, on bridges, in tunnels and on roads where some lanes change direction at rush hour. Pennsylvania law forbids driving in a lane under a red signal, and the yellow X gives you time to move out before that happens. Signal, check your mirror and blind spot, and change lanes smoothly.
