On an icy road, the rear of your car skids to the right, and you steer right to correct it. What should you expect next, and how should you handle it?
A is angled on an icy two-lane road. A dark arrow at its rear shows the initial slide toward the driver’s right. A FRONT-marked wheel detail records the right steering correction already made; no next action is shown.
Correct answer: The rear may swing left; steer left to catch it, and stay off the brake.
Why
Sudden braking or sharp steering on a wet or icy road can start a skid. On ice, slow to a crawl and leave about 10 times the normal space ahead. Brake gently, ease off if you start to skid, and brake again when you have control. Hold the wheel at 9 and 3 or at 8 and 4 so that you do not overcorrect.
