A rear tire blows out at 50 mph on a two-lane road with no shoulder. You held the wheel tightly, stayed off the brake and slowly lifted your foot from the gas. The car is now under control. What should you do next?
A remains on a two-lane road with no shoulder after a rear tire blows at 50 mph. The card states that the car is now under control, and a separate detail enlarges the flat rear tire.
Correct answer: Drive slowly on the flat tire to a safe place off the road, then stop.
Why
A front blowout makes the steering wheel shake and pulls the car to one side; a rear blowout drops one corner and makes the rear wobble. First keep control: hold the wheel tightly, stay off the brake, ease off the gas and steer smoothly. Tires in good condition and at the correct pressure are less likely to blow out.
