Passing target: 83.3% (15/18)
You drive on a busy main road toward an intersection. The traffic signal is completely dark because of a power failure. Traffic on the side street is light. What must you do?
A and following car C approach on the main road, while D approaches from the opposite direction and B approaches on the side street. All signal lamps are dark. A, B and D are well back from the white stop lines; no stopping point or path is highlighted.
Correct answer: Stop as you would at a stop sign, then go when it is your turn and the way is clear.
Why
A power failure takes away the signal that other drivers rely on, so everyone must slow down and share the intersection in turn. After you stop, yield to vehicles that stopped first and to pedestrians, and watch for drivers who do not stop. If a broken signal still shows a green or yellow light, Pennsylvania law lets you go on with caution; a red or completely dark signal always means stop.
