You drive along a long acceleration lane to enter a highway where traffic moves at about 60 mph. A car ahead of you in the acceleration lane speeds up very slowly, and the highway lane next to you is busy. What should you do?
A follows B in a long acceleration lane. The card says B speeds up slowly, while three cars occupy the adjacent highway lane at about 60 mph.
Correct answer: Stay behind the slow car at a safe distance, and merge after it into a safe gap in traffic.
Why
An acceleration lane gives you room to reach the speed of highway traffic, and it lets highway drivers see you before you enter. Signal early, look for an opening, speed up, and then merge. Pennsylvania law (75 Pa.C.S. 3321(b)(2)) gives the right-of-way to traffic on a limited-access highway, and section 3334(a) allows a lane change only when it can be made with reasonable safety.
