You get a flat tire on a two-lane highway in the country, outside any town. You slow down with care. Where should you stop to change the tire?
Correct answer: On a straight part of the shoulder, with all four wheels off the pavement and the flashers on.
Why
A car that stops in or next to a lane on a fast road is at high risk of a rear-end crash, and so is the person who works on it. Rhode Island law requires a clear view of a stopped vehicle from 200 feet in each direction, so do not stop on a curve or near the top of a hill. If you have flares, reflectors or warning triangles, the manual suggests that you use them to warn approaching drivers.
