You find an open space on a street with no signs and no painted curb. When you park in it, your front bumper will be about 10 feet from a fire hydrant. May you park there?
A is beside the right curb with a fire hydrant ahead. The question states a 10-foot distance from A’s front bumper to the hydrant and no signs or painted curb. The question image does not show the legal minimum.
Correct answer: Yes. The limit is 8 feet from a hydrant, and your car is farther away than that.
Why
Firefighters must be able to reach a hydrant and connect hoses at once, so the law keeps an 8-foot area around it clear, with or without a sign or paint. Check the distance before you leave the car, and choose another space when you are not sure that you are more than 8 feet away. The same list of prohibited places also includes sidewalks, driveway entrances and bicycle lanes.
