You park on a busy street. A bicycle lane runs next to the parked cars, on the traffic side. You are ready to get out of the driver's seat. How should you open your door?
A is parked on the right side of a street with a bicycle lane between the parked car and the traffic lane. Its driver is ready to get out. The driver door remains closed and no hand technique appears in the question.
Correct answer: Open it with your right hand, so that your body turns and you look back first.
Why
A crash with an opening car door is called 'dooring', and it can throw a bicyclist into moving traffic. Rhode Island law does not let anyone open a door on the traffic side until it is reasonably safe, and it limits how long the door stays open. Passengers have the same duty, so tell them to look back before they open a door on the traffic side.
