You parallel park on a two-way street that has a curb. When you get out, you see that your right wheels are about 16 inches from the curb. What should you do?
A is parked parallel to the right curb of a two-way street. The card states that its right wheels are about 16 inches from the curb. No legal maximum or corrected position is selected.
Correct answer: Park again, so that your right wheels are no more than 12 inches from the curb.
Why
A car that is parked too far from the curb makes the travel lane narrower, so passing drivers and bicyclists must move toward the center of the road. Rhode Island uses one number for this rule: 12 inches from the curb or the side of the road. On a one-way street, where parking on the left side is allowed, the left wheels must be within 12 inches of that curb, and the car must face the direction of traffic.
