You stop beside the car in front of an open parallel parking space and shift into reverse. In your mirror, you see a bicyclist who is coming up behind you in the same lane. What should you do?
A has stopped beside parked car C ahead of an open parallel-parking space. B approaches from behind on a bicycle in the same travel lane. The card states that A is ready to reverse; the question has no reverse path or yield instruction.
Correct answer: Stop, let the bicyclist go by, and back into the space when your path is clear.
Why
A car that backs up moves slowly and against the normal flow, so other road users often do not expect it. Wait for a clear path each time traffic comes near, and check the path again while you move. If you must back up for more than 30 feet, the Rhode Island manual recommends that you turn on your hazard lights to warn other drivers.
