You park on a downhill street that has a curb. You will leave the car for a few minutes to go into a store. Which set of steps does Rhode Island law require?
A is parked facing downhill beside a curb on its right. A side-view slope points downhill in the same direction as A. The question card says the driver will leave the car; no securing steps or wheel setting are selected.
Correct answer: Stop the engine, take the key, set the parking brake, and turn the front wheels to the curb.
Why
These steps keep the car from rolling and keep another person from driving it away. On a downhill street, wheels that point to the curb let the curb stop the car if it starts to roll. The Rhode Island manual lists the same engine, key and brake steps as the last step of parallel parking, so do them every time you park.
