Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You follow a car at a 4-second gap on a highway. Rain begins to fall, and the road becomes wet. What should you do with your following distance?
A follows B on a two-lane highway as rain falls across the wet surface. The card states that A had been using a four-second following gap.
Correct answer: Make it longer than 4 seconds, because a wet road makes it take longer to stop.
Why
Four seconds is a floor, not a target. Add time in front on slippery roads; at night, in fog or in other bad weather; behind vehicles that must stop at railroad crossings, such as school buses and transit buses; and behind large vehicles. In rain, also slow down: less speed and more space together give you room to stop without a skid.
