Passing target: 80% (24/30)
The car ahead passes a road sign. You start to count, and your front bumper reaches the same sign as you say "one thousand three." What should you do?
A follows B on a two-lane road. A’s front bumper is aligned with the roadside sign post, and the card says A reaches it on a three-second count after B passed it.
Correct answer: Slow down and count again at a new point, because you need at least four seconds.
Why
The count turns distance into time, so it works at any speed: pick a sign, pole or other fixed point, and count from when the vehicle ahead passes it until you reach it. Four seconds is the minimum in good conditions, and you add more on slippery roads, at night and behind large vehicles. A safe gap also lets you see farther past the vehicle in front of you.
