You stop at a four-way stop to go straight. When you arrive, a car is already stopped at the stop sign on the road to your left, and its driver also plans to go straight. Who should go first?
A and B are stopped behind their lines at a four-way stop. B is on the road to A’s left, and the card says B stopped before A; both plan to go straight.
Correct answer: The other driver should, because that car stopped first; you go next when it is clear.
Why
At a four-way stop, drivers take turns in the order that they arrive, and each one makes a full stop. The rule to yield to the driver on the right settles only a true tie, when two drivers arrive at about the same time. Even when it is your turn, look for vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians who are already in the intersection, and yield to them.
