Passing target: 80% (24/30)
On a dry road, you follow a motorcycle. Just ahead, railroad tracks cross the road at an angle. How should you set your following distance?
A follows motorcycle B on a dry two-lane road. Diagonal railroad tracks and a crossbuck lie ahead of B; a small fixed roadside post is visible beside their lane.
Correct answer: Keep at least 4 seconds, because the rider may slow down or change position to cross the tracks.
Why
Road hazards that a car driver hardly notices, such as potholes, gravel, slick spots, pavement seams and railroad tracks, can be deadly for a rider. On wet pavement, leave even more than 4 seconds. Also, a motorcycle's turn signal may not turn off by itself, so be sure that the rider is turning before you pull out or turn.
