Passing target: 80% (24/30)
On a four-lane road, you are behind a motorcycle that rides in the left part of your lane. There seems to be room to pass it in the right part of the same lane. What should you do?
A follows motorcycle B in the right lane of a four-lane road. B occupies the left part of the same lane, leaving visible space on its right.
Correct answer: Move fully into the next lane to pass, because the motorcycle is entitled to the whole lane.
Why
A rider may move within the lane at any time to avoid potholes, gravel or wet pavement, or to react to other traffic. If a car squeezes into the same lane, the rider loses the space needed to move away from a hazard. S.C. Code 56-5-3640 says that no motor vehicle may be driven in a way that takes away a motorcycle's full use of a lane.
