Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You are in the right lane of an interstate with two lanes in your direction. Ahead, a tow truck with flashing amber lights is stopped on the right shoulder at a crash. The left lane next to you is clear. What must you do?
A travels in the right interstate lane before a stopped tow truck B and silver car C at a crash. B and C are wholly on a distinct paved right shoulder behind a solid white edge. The card states that B has flashing amber lights and the left lane is clear.
Correct answer: Slow down a lot and move into the left lane, away from the tow truck, when it is safe.
Why
More and more police officers, rescue crews and tow operators are hit by passing traffic while they work, so South Carolina law (S.C. Code 56-5-1538) requires every driver to slow down and move over. Tow and recovery vehicles that respond to a traffic incident count as emergency vehicles under this law. Since May 15, 2026, the same duty to slow down and move over also applies to any stopped vehicle that shows flashing hazard lights.
