Passing target: 80% (24/30)
On a narrow two-lane road, you come up behind a bicyclist who is riding near the right edge. A car is coming toward you in the other lane. What should you do?
A follows cyclist B near the right edge of a narrow two-way road while car C approaches in the opposite lane. No passing route is shown.
Correct answer: Stay behind the rider until the other lane is clear, then pass with a wide gap.
Why
On the road, a bicycle is a vehicle, and the rider has the same rights as you. A rider may swerve for gravel, sand or a wet patch, so a close pass is dangerous even when the rider holds a steady line. S.C. Code 56-5-3435 requires a safe distance between your car and a bicycle at all times, so a short wait is the lawful choice.
