Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You come to a railroad crossing. No lights flash and no train is in sight. But traffic on the far side of the tracks has stopped, and there is no room for your car past the rails. What should you do?
A approaches a railroad crossing with a white stop line and dark warning lamps. B and C are stopped on the far side, leaving less than a car length between B and the far rail. No train is visible.
Correct answer: Stop at the stop line before the tracks, and wait until your whole car fits past them
Why
A car stopped on the rails has no escape if a train comes, and a train needs a long distance to stop. When the way is clear, look both ways and cross without a stop. If a train is passing, wait until it is well down the track or until the lights and gates show that it is safe. If your car ever gets stuck on the tracks, call the emergency number on the blue sign at the crossing and give the crossing details shown there.
