You drive on a highway at 55 mph with a clear view of the road. How far ahead should you try to look to plan your moves?
Correct answer: About 20 to 30 seconds ahead, while you also check the sides and mirrors.
Why
A 20- to 30-second look ahead lets you see stopped traffic, work zones, turning vehicles and people near the road while there is still time to adjust gently. In a city you may not be able to see that far, so adjust your speed and position to see as much as you can, for example by not following close behind a large vehicle. Keep your eyes moving and do not stare at one thing.
