Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You drive down an entrance ramp onto a long acceleration lane. Traffic on the highway moves at about 65 mph, and there is plenty of space between the vehicles. How should you use the acceleration lane?
A is on an acceleration lane beside two highway through lanes. Cars B and C show the traffic positions. The card states about 65 mph and that the gaps are not to scale.
Correct answer: Speed up in it to about 65 mph, then move into a gap in the highway traffic.
Why
Highway traffic moves fast, so a vehicle that enters much slower than the flow is a hazard to everyone behind it. Signal, use the length of the acceleration lane to build speed, and check your mirror and look over your shoulder for a gap. Merge smoothly into the gap, then cancel your signal.
