Your light is green, and you are about to turn right. A pedestrian with a white cane steps off the curb to cross the street that you are turning onto. What must you do?
A approaches a right turn under a green signal. Pedestrian B, shown with a white cane in the crossing and enlarged in a detail panel, has stepped into the street A intends to enter.
Correct answer: Come to a full stop and wait until the pedestrian has finished crossing.
Why
A person who cannot see well cannot judge where your car is or how fast it moves, so the law puts the full duty on the driver. Under S.C. Code 56-5-3200, you must stop before you reach the crossing point and take any care needed to avoid harm to the person. This applies whether the person uses a white cane or a guide dog, and also when your light is green.
