A LANE CLOSED AHEAD sign comes into view. Traffic ahead is heavy and slow, and you are in the lane that will close. What is the best way to merge?
A is in the closing right lane. B and C and a neutral silver sedan queue in the open left lane; another neutral sedan follows A in the right lane. The card states that the traffic is heavy and slow.
Correct answer: Stay in your lane until the merge point, then take turns with drivers in the open lane.
Why
The manual calls the zipper merge a best practice, especially at work-zone lane closures, but the law does not require it. It is for heavy, slow traffic: when traffic moves at highway speed with no backup, move to the open lane early, when it is safe. In both cases, be courteous and let drivers from the other lane take their turn.
