Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You come to a railroad crossing with no gate. The side-by-side red lights on the crossbuck post start to flash, but you cannot see a train. What must you do?
Blue A approaches an ungated railroad crossing. The paired lamps on the crossbuck mast flash red and no train is visible. A is still well back; there is no stop-zone shading or numeric gap.
Correct answer: Stop 15 to 50 feet from the nearest rail and wait until it is safe to cross
Why
The warning can start before a train comes into sight, so a train that you cannot see yet may be only seconds away. If the crossing also has a bell or horn, do not cross until it stops. If something blocks the tracks, call the emergency number on the blue sign at the crossing and give the crossing's DOT number.
