Passing target: 80% (24/30)
On a two-lane road with one lane in each direction, the car ahead stops at an intersection to turn left. The paved roadway to its right is too narrow for your car, but the paved shoulder is wide. What should you do?
A follows B, which is stopped at an intersection to turn left. The travel lane to B’s right is too narrow for a pass, with a wide paved shoulder beyond the white edge.
Correct answer: Wait behind it until it turns, because you may not use the shoulder to pass on the right.
Why
South Dakota allows a pass on the right in a few cases: when the vehicle ahead is turning left, on a road with two or more lanes in each direction, and on a one-way road with room for two lines of traffic. In every case the pass must be safe and must stay on the main roadway. Never use the shoulder to pass, and watch for pedestrians and bicyclists on the right.
