Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You drive at 55 mph on a two-lane highway behind a slow truck. The top of a hill is about one-quarter mile ahead, and you cannot see past it. No oncoming vehicle is in sight. What should you do?
Blue A follows truck B before a hill. A side profile shows the stated quarter-mile distance to a crest that hides the road beyond. Enlarged vehicle views use a labeled distance break.
Correct answer: Stay behind the truck until you can see one-third mile of clear road ahead.
Why
Do not start a pass within about one-third mile of a hill or curve that blocks your view. At 55 mph a pass takes about 10 seconds; in that time you travel more than 800 feet, and so does an oncoming vehicle. A large truck takes even longer to pass, so wait for a straight, clear stretch where the markings allow a pass.
