On a two-lane road, a school bus that comes toward you stops. Its red lights flash, and its stop arm is out. What must you do?
Blue A approaches north on a two-lane road as yellow school bus B stops southbound in the opposite lane. B’s red lamps are on and its official STOP arm is extended. A is still approaching, with no stop marker or distance label.
Correct answer: Stop at least 15 feet from the bus and stay stopped until the red lights go off
Why
Children sometimes run in front of a bus and into the path of oncoming traffic. After the red lights stop and the stop arm is no longer out, move ahead slowly and watch for children. In South Dakota, a violation of the school bus law is a Class 1 misdemeanor.
