You drive your 7-year-old niece, who is 4 feet 2 inches tall, to school. Your car has a back seat. How must she ride?
An empty cutaway of car A shows its front and back seats. The card gives the child age as seven and height as four feet two inches. No child, belt or restraint is selected.
Correct answer: In a belt-positioning booster seat with the lap and shoulder belt, in the back seat.
Why
An adult belt does not fit a small child: the lap belt rides up on the stomach and the shoulder belt crosses the neck. A booster seat raises the child so that the belt lies on the hip bones and the collarbone. After the child is 9, or at least 4 feet 9 inches tall, the child uses the seat belt, and the back seat is still the safer place.
