U.S. Road Signs

Warning, Construction & Information Signs

You see several of these signs in a row beside the road ahead. What do they tell you?

A tall yellow rectangle with one large black chevron that points right.
  1. AThe road ends ahead, and you must turn right at a T-intersection.
  2. BAn object such as a barrier stands at the edge of the road.
  3. CKeep to the right of a traffic island in the road ahead.
  4. DThe road curves to the right; the signs outline the curve.
Show the answer and the explanation

Correct answer: D. The road curves to the right; the signs outline the curve.

Why

Chevron signs stand on the outside of a curve or turn. Each chevron points the way the road goes, here to the right, and a row of them outlines the curve, which helps most at night. Slow down before the curve and steer along it. Chevrons do not mark a T-intersection, where a wide sign with one large arrow is used, or an object at the road edge.

Why the other answers are not correct

  • A. Wrong: the MUTCD does not allow chevrons on the far side of a T-intersection; a large arrow sign does that job.
  • B. Wrong: the MUTCD does not allow chevrons to mark objects next to the road; object markers do that.
  • C. Wrong: a Keep Right sign is a white regulatory sign; right-pointing chevrons are not allowed on a central island.
