U.S. Road Signs

School Zones, Railways & Work Areas

You are driving straight ahead and see this sign. What does it warn you about?

A yellow diamond sign with a black border, a black cross, and a black railroad track symbol across the right arm of the cross.
  1. AYour road crosses railroad tracks just before the intersection ahead.
  2. BTurns at the intersection ahead are not allowed because of the railroad.
  3. CThe road to the right passes over the railroad on a bridge.
  4. DTracks cross the road to your right, just past the intersection.
Show the answer and the explanation

Correct answer: D. Tracks cross the road to your right, just past the intersection.

Why

This sign is used on a road that runs next to a railroad. It warns that the crossroad ahead has a railroad crossing very close to the intersection, on the side where the track symbol is. If you turn that way, slow down, look for trains and be ready to stop soon after the turn. The round yellow railroad sign with an X is different: it warns that tracks cross the road you are on.

Why the other answers are not correct

  • A. Wrong: the track symbol is on a side arm, so the tracks cross the side road, not your road.
  • B. Wrong: this is a warning sign; it does not prohibit turns.
  • C. Wrong: the sign warns of a crossing at road level, where you may have to stop for a train.
