School Zones, Railways & Work Areas

You see this sign at a railroad crossing. What does it tell you?

A white rectangle sign with a black border and the black words DO NOT STOP ON TRACKS.
  1. AYou do not need to slow down or look for trains at this crossing.
  2. BStay off the tracks until there is room for you past them.
  3. CThe tracks here are out of service, so trains no longer use them.
  4. DBuses and trucks need not stop at this crossing.
Show the answer and the explanation

Correct answer: B. Stay off the tracks until there is room for you past them.

Why

This sign is posted where a line of traffic can back up onto the tracks, for example before a STOP sign, a signal or a roundabout just past the crossing. Do not drive onto the tracks until there is room for your whole vehicle on the far side. A vehicle that is stuck on the tracks can be hit by a train. The TRACKS OUT OF SERVICE sign is different: it tells you that trains no longer use the line.

Why the other answers are not correct

  • A. Wrong: the sign does not remove the need to look for trains; it tells you not to stop on the tracks.
  • C. Wrong: that is the meaning of a TRACKS OUT OF SERVICE sign.
  • D. Wrong: that is the meaning of an EXEMPT plaque, not of this sign.
