  1. ATraffic from another road will join your lane from the right.
  2. BYour lane ends ahead; merge left when there is a safe gap.
  3. CYour lane becomes a right-turn lane at the next intersection.
  4. DA new lane opens on the right, so you can stay in your lane.
Show the answer and the explanation

Correct answer: B. Your lane ends ahead; merge left when there is a safe gap.

Why

This yellow diamond warns that the number of lanes in your direction drops ahead. Here the right line bends in, so the right lane ends. If you are in that lane, signal, find a safe gap and merge before the lane ends. If you are in the other lane, leave space for drivers who merge. The Merge sign looks similar, but it shows a curved line that joins from another road, not a lane line that bends in.

Why the other answers are not correct

  • A. That is the Merge sign, which shows a curved line that joins a straight arrow; on this sign a lane line bends in because a lane ends.
  • C. The MUTCD does not allow this sign where a through lane becomes a turn lane; regulatory lane signs show that change.
  • D. That is the Added Lane sign; on this sign the right line bends in, which shows a lane that ends.
