Correct answer: C. The number is the route number of this highway.
Why
This is a state route sign. The number names the highway route you are on. It is not a speed, a distance, an exit number or a mile marker. This picture shows the basic design in the national manual, but each state designs its own route sign, so the look changes from state to state. A U.S. route sign has a white shield on black, and an Interstate sign has a red, white and blue shield. A speed limit sign has the words SPEED LIMIT.
Why the other answers are not correct
- A. Wrong: exit numbers are shown on green exit signs and plaques, not on a route sign.
- B. Wrong: distances are shown on green guide signs with place names and miles.
- D. Wrong: mile points are shown on small green reference location signs.
