Correct answer: D. Slow down and prepare to stop at the STOP sign ahead.
Why
This warning sign tells you that a STOP sign is ahead, often one that you cannot see yet because of a curve, a hill or trees. Slow down early and be ready to make a full stop at the STOP sign, not at this warning sign. The red octagon on the yellow diamond shows a STOP sign ahead. The similar Signal Ahead sign shows a traffic signal, and the Yield Ahead sign shows a red triangle.
Why the other answers are not correct
- A. Wrong: this yellow sign is a warning; you make the full stop at the STOP sign farther ahead, not at this sign.
- B. Wrong: the sign warns that you will have to stop; it says nothing about cross traffic stopping.
- C. Wrong: a traffic signal ahead is shown by a different sign with a red, yellow and green signal symbol.
