Licensing & Test ReadinessStandalone practice
Evan, 16, has logged 40 hours of practice driving with his parent: 34 hours in daylight and 6 hours after sunset. What more does he need before his parent can certify his practice hours?
Correct answer: At least 4 more hours, all after sunset
Why
The parent, guardian or other adult who signs a minor's license application must certify that the teen drove at least 40 hours on a permit, with at least 10 of them at night after sunset. Night driving is harder because you see less and headlight glare is worse, so the law makes sure that each new driver gets supervised practice in the dark. The 40 hours can include driving time in a driver education course and a small number of simulator hours.
