Jake is 16 and got his driver license (not a permit) last month. At 12:30 a.m., he wants to drive home alone from a friend's house. It is not an emergency, and he is not driving to or from work or a school activity. What does Utah law say?
Correct answer: He may not drive from 12 a.m. to 5 a.m., because no exception applies to this trip
Why
Night driving adds risk for new drivers, who have less experience with darkness, fatigue and impaired drivers. The handbook table shows this limit at age 16, and the law applies it to every driver younger than 17. The handbook lists trips to and from a school-sponsored activity as an exception, but the law is narrower: it covers only a direct drive home after an activity when the school provided the transportation from and back to the school.
