Passing target: 80% (16/20)
You drive on a two-lane road and come up behind a bicyclist who rides near the right edge. The oncoming lane is clear, and you can see far ahead. How must you pass?
A approaches cyclist B near the right edge of a two-lane road. The opposite lane is empty and the card states that the forward view is long.
Correct answer: Slow down and leave at least 4 feet between your car and the bicyclist
Why
A bicyclist can move suddenly to avoid a pothole, a drain grate or debris, so a close pass leaves no space for an error. The 4-foot rule also protects other vulnerable users, such as pedestrians, people in wheelchairs and people who ride horses. If the road is too narrow for a safe pass, stay behind the bicyclist until you can pass safely.
