Your traffic light is green, and you are waiting in the intersection to turn left. An oncoming bicyclist is about to ride straight through the intersection. What must you do?
Blue A waits in the intersection facing west under a green light. A bicyclist approaches eastbound in the opposing lane to go straight through.
Correct answer: Wait for the bicyclist to go through, and then turn in a safe gap.
Why
A green light allows a left turn, but it does not give you the right-of-way over oncoming traffic. In Vermont, a vehicle or a bicyclist that comes toward you has the right-of-way when it is in the intersection or close enough to be a hazard. Many crashes happen during left turns, so wait for a safe gap and also look for pedestrians in the street that you turn into. Vermont law gives a bicyclist the same rights and duties as the driver of a vehicle.
