Passing target: 80% (16/20)
You are driving on a two-lane road. A fire truck with its siren on and its red lights flashing comes toward you from the opposite direction. What must you do?
A travels west in the upper lane while an eastbound fire truck approaches in the opposite lane. Red flash marks and the factual card identify its flashing lights and siren.
Correct answer: Pull over to the right side of the road, stop, and stay stopped until it passes.
Why
When a police, fire, ambulance or rescue vehicle comes from any direction with its siren sounding or its blue or red lights flashing, Vermont law requires you to pull to the right and come to a full stop. Stay stopped until it has gone by, so that it has a clear path. If you are in a roundabout, exit first and then pull over. The rule is different for an emergency vehicle that is stopped at the roadside: slow down, go with caution, and change lanes away from it when you can safely do so.
