Passing target: 80% (16/20)
On a two-lane road, a pickup truck has followed very close behind you for a mile. Now its driver signals and moves into the other lane to pass you. What should you do?
A stays in its right-hand lane while silver pickup B is already in the opposing lane, passing from behind. A broken yellow center line separates the lanes.
Correct answer: Ease off the gas a little and keep right, so that the pickup can pass safely.
Why
A driver who follows too closely is a danger to you, so the safest result is to let that driver get in front of you. Vermont law says that a driver who is being passed must give way to the right and must not speed up until the pass is complete. The manual adds that you should slow a little and keep right when you are being passed. With an aggressive driver, stay calm, get out of the way, and never try to get even.
